YESHUA
What's in a Name?
We've been calling Him Jesus for most of our
Christian experience. I didn't realize that Jesus is not His name until He
challenged me a couple of years ago about His name. It seems that the English
language did not even have a J until around 1600 AD, until then it was I, then
He was called Iesus. Iesus is from the Greek word Ihsouz which some claim means
son of Zeus. So what is His real name?
When the Angel came to Mary and told her that she was
going to have a child and that she was to name him ..?
What did the angel actually say? Mary's native tongue
was Aramaic a Hebrew dialect, so most likely the angel spoke in to her in
Aramac or Hebrew. The name was Yehshua which mean Yahweh or (Yah) saves in
Hebrew. His native tongue was also Aramaic. He went on to say several time by
"this name shall you be saved", that is Yehshua. Not to be picky but
it seems to me that if Gabriel, announcing His conception called Him Yehshua,
and His parents, friends and disciples called Him Yehshua and taught that it
was by the name Yehshua that we were saved then we should use it too. By the
way His name in Hebrew directly translated into English is Joshua. So how did
we get from Yehshua to Jesus?
